I am attaching here an interview with Bharati Mukherjee. (This is part 2 of an interview at Drexel, where she briefly discusses Jasmine). She discusses how she sees herself as a writer — and says she’s an American writer, first, not Indian. It will be important to think about notions of Americanism as we delve into American literature next year. What is American? What does it mean to be American and who gets to claim that? What does it mean to be an American writer? Answers to some of these questions will help define our course as we study American literature next year. But back to Mukherjee – what are your reactions to her claims, particularly with reference to her notion of hyphenization? Do you agree with how she defines herself and her writing?
